Leadership from every nation is on board with the search to display integrity, including Obama. Citizens prefer that their public servants actually hold the integrity they claim to have.
The Department of Homeland Security has a secretary who is part of President Barrack Obama’s cabinet. This department has been in a frenzy shutting down websites without court orders. Sites were accused of trafficking counterfeit products and/or infringing on copyrighted goods but with unsubstantiated claims. A type of search engine domain that was shut down spurred interest from freedom supporters. These advocates are concerned that this could be censorship.
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act grants Homeland Security the authority to shutdown any website without requiring a court order. Alan Mason is one citizen who feels strongly about this and isn’t afraid to speak about topics that effect the general populace. He states, “I do believe that more should be done to stop the illegal downloading of copyrighted materials and that a branch of the government should police such efforts to distribute protected intellectual property illegally. However, I do not believe that the DHS should have any authority to shut down anyone’s website without due process. The state must prove their case against the individual or group before shutdown can take place. Doing otherwise is unconstitutional in my view.”
President Obama’s administration has been caught engaging in software piracy. The U.K. business, SpryMedia, is the entity that had its Data Tables software ripped off. Changes were made in an attempt to hide the fact that it was stolen and used on the Healthcare.gov’s website. This is the domain used for people to apply for and get help with Obamacare.
After hearing this information, Mason replies, “Hopefully, this was a terrible oversight on someone’s behalf. Incompetence might not be forgiven but it can be forgotten. The government should pay for the proper licensing permissions. If it was intentional misuse of copyrighted/patented software, the copyright/patent holder should sue in civil court and receive restitution.”
Protocol would dictate that the Department of Homeland Security would seize the domain of Healthcare.gov due to software piracy. Technically though, the President is DHS’s authority figure. This makes the Department of Homeland Security’s response uncertain.
