The Longing for More

The Longing is an alternative rock band based out of Los Angeles, Calif. Laura Bradley(vocals and composition), Michael Wallace(bass), Tom Plumb(drums), Yury Anisonyan(rhythm guitar) and James Kloeppel(lead guitar) are the musicians that make up the band. The band’s roots are scattered all over the globe as each member is from a different place. They have just finished a new album that will be available soon. A preview of the first track named “Wicked” can be heard either on their website or on Soundcloud.

Michael found his passion for music at an early age and has dedicated himself to his craft by putting in hard work. When he was first learning how to play the bass, he practiced between five and six hours a day. Now, he’s a sound engineer and teaches audio at the Los Angeles Recording School as well as being a musician. Laura professionally sings both the United States and the Canadian national anthems at sporting events in both countries. She has done so many times in cities such as Miami, Los Angeles and Toronto.

It’s been an interesting journey for The Longing and the ride into the future begins with their newest music on their latest album titled “Bleed.”

Gordon McMillan is ready to see his homeland set free from outside rule. On Sep. 18, 2014, residents of Scotland will vote on whether to secede from the United Kingdom. This will be the second time in Gordon’s life in which Scotland has held an election for independence, the first being in 1979. Political figures and many others have shared their viewpoints about what may or may not happen if Scotland attains liberty. The impact could very well be felt worldwide in many different ways.

Scottish cities are in the top areas in banking and finance, oil, fishing, whiskey exports and academics. Financial institutions are globally networked together and at this moment in time, very unstable. A little ripple by Great Britain could have a substantial impact on the international economy. Another big topic of contention is the nuclear arsenal that the UK government has stockpiled in Scotland.

Play Ball

The Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Pittsburgh Pirates, Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles Calif. by a final score of 12-2. The Dodgers dominated from beginning to end in this game.
Hanley Ramirez singled to center scoring Andre Ethier in the bottom of the 1st inning. Ramirez hit 2- 412 foot long home runs to center field while going 4-4 with 4 Runs and 5 RBIs.
Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched well enough to get the win while surrendering only 2 Runs and striking out 10 Pirates. This brings his record to 6-2 on the season. Brandon Cumpton drops to 0-2 on the year after giving up 10 Runs to the Dodgers in just 3.2 innings on the mound.
The Dodgers are now 30-27 so far this year, which is good enough for second place in the NL West while the Pirates fall to 25-30, keeping them in fourth in the NL Central.

Baseball’s Back

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies met on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. Zack Greinke, now undefeated at 4-0 on the young season, outdueled Cole Hamels (0-1) in his first game back from injury as the Dodgers beat the Phillies 5-2. Greinke lasted seven strong innings, J.P. Howell handled the eighth and Kenly Jansen picked up the save for throwing a perfect ninth inning.

Matt Stevens is a fan who organized a get-together for about 20 of his friends to go to the game with him. Stevens claims, “Everyone seemed to have a good time. I had a blast too.”

Sound Advice

Since moving to Los Angeles, Calif. from Indiana, Scott Gutierrez works with a lot of talent. As a professional, he engineers and produces many different genres of music and has been for just about 2 decades. He creates a rapport with most of the artists he works with and even has his thumbprint on sound for movies as well. Alan Mason is a fellow engineer and teacher of Gutierrez. Mason credits him by referring to Gutierrez as “legit”.

Beyond his own manipulation of audio, Gutierrez gives back to the industry by teaching others his craft at the Los Angeles Recording School in Hollywood. One piece of guidance he wants to pass on to anyone with the desire to be in the audio industry is to listen to the advice of those who have come before. Adding onto his previous comment, Mason says Gutierrez is “old school” as well.

Animal Rights and Wrongs

Animal Rights from TruthPub on Vimeo.

Animal rights is a significant issue in society all over the world. Cruelty to animals is a big problem today just as it has been for centuries. Even in places where there are strict laws preventing animal abuse, cruelty still happens all too often. This is a test of human civility, making it an important matter for everyone who lives on this planet.
The issue doesn’t stop with people abusing their pets. It extends to treatment of animals for the sake of fur, hunting and fishing, veganism, human overpopulation, producing food, testing products, fighting, etc. There may also be a link between those who are cruel to animals and domestic violence. People are on both sides of the animal rights topic while speaking out on behalf of their beliefs.
There is much that can be done to help combat the problem. Caring individuals can adopt a pet. Those who aren’t able to adopt may foster until an owner can be found. Anyone who can’t foster may still be able to donate their time, money, towels, blankets, pillows, etc. to non-kill shelters and/or animal rights organizations such as the Humane Society, ASPCA, Ace of Hearts, Marley’s Mutts and Last Chance Critters. There are other good organizations that protect animals but there are some that do kill the animals such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and the city pound. Sharing rescue stories is another good way to help spread awareness.

Griffith Park has Something for Everyone

Griffith Park has Something for Everyone from TruthPub on Vimeo.

Griffith Park was created in 1896 when civic-minded philanthropist, Colonel Griffith Jenkins Griffith donated 3,015 acres of land to the city of Los Angeles on December 16. It’s one of the largest urban parks in North America totaling 4,210 acres. The park is operated by the Los Angeles Dept. of Recreation and Parks.
Exercise enthusiasts, tourists, families, nature lovers and many other individuals with a wide range of interests enjoy Griffith Park. There are many recreational events that take place all over the park at any given time. Many golf courses are spread throughout. The Hollywood Sign is a big place of interest for many out of town visitors. Even the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens are located here. As one walks through the park on one of the many trails, it’s easy to see people enjoying themselves everywhere.
Wildlife and vegetation are important aspects to the park. Due to this fact, forest fires can be detrimental to the survival of the living things that call Griffith Park home. No smoking and campfire signs are posted all over to attempt to keep the risk of fire low. This is such a big problem due to the very dry climate in southern California.

Church Feeds Hungry

Every Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon, the Church of the Blessed Sacrament holds a food drive to feed the hungry of Los Angeles, Calif. The event is held at 6657 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. This is extremely compassionate behavior on behalf of the church. The process is simple. As individuals walk up to the pantry, they are handed a bunch of food to take with them. The church also has The Center at Blessed Sacrament, which is working to end homelessness in Hollywood. This is located at 6636 Selma Ave. There are even more ways to help at Hope-Net.
According to the 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report, approximately 57,735 homeless people now call Los Angeles home. This is a 23.5 percent increase from 2012. Now, the city of L.A. is considering restricting the public feeding of homeless people. If such a law were established, it would join more than 30 other major U.S. cities. In many of these areas, churches and other relief organizations have taken measures to make food lines inside rather than in public.
Los Angeles and New York City combine to account for 20 percent of America’s homeless population. Both HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and Mike Arnold, the homeless authority’s executive director, agree that housing costs are the main reason for the increase in homelessness. Donovan concluded that progress was also inhibited by federal cutbacks on the homeless.

And the Children Eat

Citrus County Blessings is a non-profit organization that stemmed from Blessings in a Backpack. The split took place when charity workers of Citrus County, Fla. wanted more of their efforts to go to the children than the national organization was willing to give. The national body also wanted the donations sent to a central location, which would disburse them from there.
Citrus County Blessings feeds children who would otherwise go hungry over the weekend. It now gives $125 per child, as opposed to the $80 a year that Blessings in a Backpack will. St. Timothy, along with other churches from the community, packs lunches on the second Tuesday of the month. Each meal is ready to eat, pop or pull top in single serve, safe packages. All volunteers are dedicated and use extra care in packing each meal well, while taking into consideration different factors such as the time of year. In the case of any unusable food, it is donated to other charities and everything that can be recycled, is.
On Thursday, January 9, 2014, Marcia and Jim Webb, Joe and Doris Moore, William Dively, Sue Nawrocki and Debbie Lattin (chairperson) donate their time to feeding hungry children in a tiny building near Crystal River Primary School in Citrus County.
